News and Information for Milton, Georgia

Juliette, GA? Don't you mean Whistle Stop, AL?

Juliette, GA? Don't you mean Whistle Stop, AL? - The South has always been a haven for wonderful story Juliette, Georgia telling. From "Gone With The Wind" to " Driving Miss Daisy" and everything in between, we have definitely had our fair share of Hollywood highlights. One movie of such a caliber would be the impeccable "Fried Green Tomatoes" staring Jessica Tandy, Kathy Bates, Mary-Louise Parker and Mary Stuart Masterson.

While this wonderful story of undying friendship, tragedy, and love is officially set in Alabama, many scenes of the film were actually shot locally in the quaint town of Juliette, Georgia - just couple of hours south of Milton off of 1-75.

According to local folklore, this little bump in the road was just about to call it quits right before the movie's producers came calling. Since then, Juliet has become a "must see" for many fans of the film throughout the world.( When there recently, my wife and I struck up a conversation with a couple from England as they waited for the cafe to open it's doors.) Thankfully, much of the town still sits as it did in the movie with a few minor changes here and there.

Are the fried green tomatoes really that good?

Obviously, the first thing anyone will want to do is park their taste buds at the "Whistle Stop Cafe." To put it mildly, the food is FANTASTIC. The menu harbors every dish the South is known for and then some; all concocted with your satisfaction in mind. The friendly waitress came to us a with a question she already knew the answer to, " Care to start of with some Fried Green Tomatoes?" Of course we did. Once they hit the table, my wife had inhaled three of them before I could say "Frank Bennett." To enjoy such a savory delight was worth the trip alone. While dining, you are able to feast your eyes on THE cafe and see where Idgie, Ruth, Big George and the rest conducted business and made that special sauce. Throughout the interior, you will find pictures from the movie both during filming as well as candid shots.

So the Cafe is great; give me another reason to go!

Other areas of interest include the many buildings seen in the film. Today, tenants include The Whistle Stop Cafe Gift Shop, Juliette Opera House, and Dew Drop in Cigar Store. Shops constructed since filming wrapped include The Honeycomb; a wonderful little shop with honey related products and other southern delights. From what we were told, more are on the way.
